Whether you know it or not, you have an "estate plan" – either your own formal estate plan or the state's plan. If you die without a valid estate plan, you die "intestate" and the probate court will distribute your assets according to state laws of intestate succession which are very broad.
If you do not prepare your estate plan, the state will do it for you and it will not be specific to you, your estate, or your family's needs.
A properly prepared estate plan can be as simple as having a will or may be very complex, including multiple trusts. Whatever your needs are, proper estate planning is for everyone!
